Peyote People, a fair trade co-operative recognized by the Traditional Huichol Indian Government of San Andres, Cohamaita, is a familiar Puerto Vallarta landmark committed to the promotion of Huichol artwork and the preservation of the Huichol customs and traditions.

Colectika Mexican Folk art Gallery, (a new Peyote Museum), is proud to present Julia Fuentes and J. Juan Melchor of San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca, at the opening gala between 6 and 10 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23, 2011. Julia and J. Juan will be available at Colectika on November 24th and 25th, 2011, to answer questions.

Julia Fuentes, an internationally recognized artist and graduate of the Bellas Artes Oaxacan campus, comes from one of the best recognized wood carving families in the Oaxacan valley. Julia started painting her brother Zenny’s pieces when she was 10 years old. At the gala, Julia will give a presentation of her unique painting technique and J. Juan will demonstrate how the traditional copal wood is carved into the fantastic animal figures we have all come to know and love.

For the past ten years, Peyote People has promoted several well-known artists – Jacobo and Maria Angeles Ojeda, Julia Fuentes y J. Juan Melchor, Claudio y Teresa Ojeda, the workshop of Afonso Castillo, Ricardo Linares, Mario Saulo Moreno, Demetrio Aguilar, Florencio Lopez, Santos Bautista, Luis Castro, Neikame and Jose Benitez regularly exhibit in institutions such as the National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago, the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix and the Smithsonian Native American Museum, to name a few.

Colectika Mexican Folk Art Gallery invites you to take a new look at some very old Mexican traditions in a world where skeletons come alive to celebrate life, Shamans converse with their Gods and nahuales shift from human to animal form under the light of the moon.
